In this all-in-one tutorial, I have done the hard work to sort out the best trucks in Euro Truck Simulator 2 so that you don’t have to.
Both for you and your fleet of AI drivers. So without any ado lets move on.
Question 1 : Which truck should you buy for yourself ?
There are two approaches one can adapt when you decide to purchase a truck for yourself.
The first is to buy them as they come in their out-of-box configuration. The table below is your friend if that is your approach. Because in it I have enlisted the best trucks in different price brackets.
RANGE | TRUCK | PRICE | ENGINE | FUEL TANK |
---|---|---|---|---|
<€100K | MAN TGX XL | €99,965 | 320 HP | 1,250 L |
€100K-€125K | Volvo FH16 Classic Sleeper | €101,755 | 540 HP | 1,400 L |
€125K-€150K | Volvo FH16 Classic Globetrotter | €141,825 | 600 HP | 1,400 L |
€150K-€175K | MAN TGX XXL | €164,915 | 540 HP | 1,250 L |
€175K-€200K | Volvo FH Globetrotter XL | €186,595 | 750 HP | 1,400 L |
€200K-€250K | DAF XF Super Space | €227,165 | 530 HP | 800 L |
€250K-€300K | MAN TGX Euro 6 XXL | €265,750 | 640 HP | 960 L |
>€300K | Scania S High Roof | €314,410 | 730 HP | 1,000 L |
The second approach is to buy a truck in its lowest variant available and then build it from there by adding upgrades.
If that is the approach you like then in the list below I have ranked the base variants of all the trucks based on a number of performance oriented factors.
RANK | TRUCK | PRICE | ENGINE | FUEL TANK |
---|---|---|---|---|
01 | Volvo FH16 | €101,755 | 540 HP | 1,400 L |
02 | Volvo FH | €104,415 | 460 HP | 1,400 L |
03 | Mercedes-Benz New Actros | €105,905 | 421 HP | 1,400 L |
04 | Scania R 2009 | €113,445 | 360 HP | 1,400 L |
05 | Scania Streamline | €112,615 | 360 HP | 1,400 L |
06 | Scania R | €123,680 | 370 HP | 1,290 L |
07 | Scania S | €125,180 | 370 HP | 1,290 L |
08 | MAN TGX XL | €99,965 | 320 HP | 1,250 L |
09 | MAN TGX Euro 6 XL | €114,775 | 360 HP | 1,160 L |
10 | Mercedes-Benz Actros | €101,105 | 320 HP | 600 L |
11 | Renault Magnum | €124,735 | 440 HP | 1,200 L |
12 | DAF XF | €133,970 | 370 HP | 1,400 L |
13 | DAF XF105 | €120,150 | 360 HP | 1,000 L |
14 | Iveco Stralis Active Space | €96,505 | 310 HP | 1,300 L |
15 | Renault Premium | €108,175 | 380 HP | 1,000 L |
16 | Iveco Stralis Hi-Way | €157,945 | 310 HP | 1,200 L |
Question 2 : Which truck should you buy for your AI drivers ?
I recommend you to buy the Iveco Stralis Active Space. Because at €94K, it’s bottom variant is the cheapest truck available in the game.
Now why am I suggesting you to buy the cheapest truck in ETS2 for your AI drivers ?
Because your AI driver’s efficiency and earning potential is not affected by the configuration of his (or her) truck. Sounds unrealistic ?
Yes because it is! But unfortunately that’s how ETS2 is designed.
So while with the same low specification truck your AI driver is able to climb the tallest of mountains. You on the other side will never get any further than the foothills of the same.
For this reason, I recommended you to buy them the Iveco Stralis Active Space.
Pro Tip : Once you buy a truck for your AI always choose them to be delivered to your garage.
Don’t drive them yourself because it is a pure waste of time and might induce unwanted damages en route as well, unnecessarily costing you money for repair afterwards.
Question 3 : Does better truck increase AI driver’s earnings ?
SCS Software had declared that from version 1.23.x onward, performance of AI driver will be impacted by the truck they drive.
But since then a number of subversions have been published and still there is not concrete proof to prove that they have kept their promise.
My own test result :
I did my own test on two different saves –
- In one I provided all my AI drivers Iveco Stralis Active Space which is the cheapest truck available in ETS2
- While in the other I provided all of them the premium variant of Volvo FH16 Classic Sleeper which comes with 750HP and costs €144K
But I didn’t find any noticeable difference in their earnings. Contrary to the claims made by SCS Software,
So spending all that extra money for my AI driver waws certainly not worth it in my opinion.
What actually matters then ?
What actually puts significant effect on your AI driver’s earnings however is how you train them after recruitment.
I have my own method of training and that has served me and tons of my readers extremely well over the years.
You can find it in my step-by-step driver training guide!

based on my experience during play ETS, I agree on you that better truck does not influencing AI’s earning, instead of the city location influences the earning. Choose cities that have petrochemicals factory (such as london, berlin), the cities that located in the edge of the map (bratislava), or both (such as budapest, liverpool, glasgow), and also hire driver that has ADR and high value cargo skill. Thus the AI will give more earning.

I bought a Mercedes-Benz New Actros when started. Is it a mistake to do so?

You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be actually something that I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and extremely broad for me. I’m looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!

great blog posts mate! i more or less followed similar steps when i was getting started and it definitely works
about the iveco stralis – i’ve been able to get it down to 92k going with the cheapest paint and taking the sun visor and front mirror off
might have been made cheaper in a later update? still saves 3k, which is 30k every 10 drivers etc

There is an exploit here. get 2 garages, fill them with trucks and ai drivers, then travel between them… infinite money!

For some reason I don’t like Scania’s mirrors. But since it is the most expensive, I put it on target. For now I have bought Iveco Stralis. At the first opportunity, I’ll buy a new garage and leave it to AI driver. I can say that working with freelance jobs is more profitable right now.

Good article, but i never drive the default trucks. The only truck i use is the Roman Diesel (mod) and so do all my AI drivers. Great to drive and it has sounds to die for.
